“We’re not Poachers! We’re Hikers!”

A map of the hikers’ route.

No need to get upset if you see a crowd of people walking through the dunes opposite Eerste Steen Resort outside Melkbosstrand tomorrow night.

The 30-odd young hikers will be escorted by a senior conservation officer from the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve. According to Elzette Krynauw the group will leave Eerste Steen around 20:00 and hopefully finish the walk around 22:00.

Don’t want to be mistaken for poachers
Krynauw realised that the sight of people traipsing around in the dark, could cause concern. She did some quick thinking and sent emails alerting various bodies, including the Melkbosstrand police and Neighbourhood Watch. She wrote, “I’m sending this email so you are aware of us in the dunes as you might get public contacting you about people walking with torches in the dunes.  Definitely do not want to have the police surround us and think we are poachers!”

Well we hope you will still keep a look out for “genuine” poachers, as conditions for them will be perfect, i.e. full moon and spring tides. 🙂
