Teach is on the Telly!

Got a problem? Call Melt van der Spuy. Just one thing though, he might be at his day job, teaching at Melkbosstrand High School. Then again, he might not. Melt’s career took a public turn in June this year when he got the role of the handyman in the television show “My plek of joune?” of which episode 1 airs this Friday evening.

The series taps into the world’s passion for seeing the ugly and old transformed. In his role as telly handyman Melt teams up with stylist Isabel Barends and solves the décor difficulties experienced by flatmates. For Melt this means, “Doing anything from painting to deconstructing to constructing, restoring, upholstering, and tinkering with electrical circuits and more. Your typical handyman stuff,” he says casually.

Melt joking: "How to cut your tjommie's hair."

Melt has always loved working with his hands. At one time he also did DIY for a guesthouse.

But still, how does a Melkbosstrand teacher land up on telly? Rude question but Melt fields it easily. “A friend tagged me in a post on Facebook. The production house Wyrd Films was looking for a handyman for a TV series. I thought, why not, and went for an audition. A week later the role was mine!” He appears in each of the 14 episodes of the series, as the series was created around two main characters, the interior decorator Isabel Barends and Melt.

Melt’s pupils don’t need to be worried. He loves teaching and will be around for them.
