Garies – Talk about a small town having a big bazaar. Garies’ recent NG Church bazaar (Saturday afternoon, 24 September) netted a satisfactory
R125 000. Yes, you read right.

And no, no livestock were sold in order to inflate this sum. On sale were cakes and meats and breads big enough to be used as cultural weapons. Some items, like a first-aid kit and a cross-stich artwork were auctioned off, which admittedly helped raise the final sum.

A work of art executed in cross-stich was auctioned.

The bazaar was held in the Gideon Basson hall. Local Hilda Coetzee reports that it drew many out-of-towners.

Two of them, Max Hildebrandt and his lovely young wife, were in Garies on a visit from Nepal, and they stayed over at Sophia’s Guesthouse.

Food was the focus of the afternoon and the bazaar tables groaned under the weight of ornately decorated cakes, massive “potbrode,” meats and other delicacies.

Sales were brisk as the final tally shows. Pity the poor city slickers who imagine that one can only do business in a mall!
