Two mixed media artworks by Melkbos artist Richard Scott have been stolen by armed robbers. Three armed robbers descended on the Daville Baillie Gallery in Norwood, Johannesburg, during working hours on
31 January.
The robbery was captured by CCTV cameras. Footage shows how the robbers took artworks displayed in different parts of the gallery. Scott’s canvases, Studio 29 and Studio 30, are one metre by one metre in size.
They are in the signature bold pop style for which he has been acclaimed internationally.
According to the gallery a total of five contemporary artworks were stolen. Their collective value is R600 000. According to Wikipedia “Richard’s work is mostly sold outside South Africa. Art Collectors in Europe own at least 75% of the 2,500 paintings he has produced in the last 10 years.”
