A poaching expedition went pear-shaped in Melkbosstrand last night. The poachers are minus abalone valued at approximately R500 000, a car, equipment and one of their members.
The drama started at around 21:00 when a Melkbosstrand resident noticed three vehicles dropping off divers. A joint operation between members of Law Enforcement Marine Unit, Melkbosstrand Police, the Police’s K9 Unit and the Melkbosstrand Neighbourhoodwatch Anti-Poaching Unit was launched. As the poachers tried to get away a high-speed car chase ensued through the town.
One suspect was arrested for possession of abalone, 1076 units of abalone valued at approximately R500 000 were confiscated, as were a car, diving equipment, a scale and a shucking tool.
