The gruesome package dumped outside the home of Saldanha Bay’s mayor Marius Koen is still shrouded in mystery.

Caller can’t be traced
The package was dumped on the sidewalk outside Koen’s home in Langebaan on 12 August, the day of his inauguration as mayor, and a day on which he received many phone calls. One of these calls came from a man who warned Koen that he had been asked to bewitch him. The man told Koen that he had looked at his aura and saw no bad elements in it and had consequently decided against doing it. He warned Koen that somebody else would do so.

According to warrant officer P. Lotz of Langebaan police it has not been possible to trace this man. Lotz says he phoned from a private number, and his call was just one of a multitude of calls that Koen received on that day. “A 205 would have to be obtained, and investigating the large number of people who called Koen on that day would amount to an invasion of privacy.”

Ram’s head traced to Sutherland
The gruesome package contained a ram’s head, a dead rat, a styrofoam cup, a live tortoise, a handmade knife and a laminated letter stating that Koen would be brought low. According to Lotz the ram has been traced to Sutherland; it was later sold at auction. DA provincial chairman Anton Bredell was very concerned about the threat to Koen in the light of the recent assassination of a DA ward councillor in the Northern Cape. Koen has been assigned a security detail.
