14-Year-old animal lover Gareth Dahl has raised a whopping R23 800 for Peanut Animal Welfare. Gareth, who is a Lead SA Youth Hero and Curro learner, raised the money the hard way. He went from door to door asking for sponsorships, which he then sold, and he completed the 10 km Gun Run on 16 October.

It was the second time that Gareth has run the race to raise funds for Peanut Animal Welfare. This year he managed to nearly double the amount of money he raised for

the Melkbosstrand-based organisation. He also shaved off quite a few seconds of his running time. He completed the race in 56.20 minutes which placed him at no 763 out of +-7000 runners . Not too shabby, eh.

Gareth chooses his charities very carefully, his mother Rache tells Melkbos.net. “He wants to help the ones that don’t get help from the government. Plus, we’ve adopted animals from Peanut!”

Having the Lead SA award helped
This year the whole process was easier than the first year. “It helped that he had the Lead SA award and had been on radio and TV,” Rache says. “People realised that he is not a fraud. We got big donations in the first three weeks and all in all the whole amount took two months to raise.”

Raising the money was hard work because no cash was involved. Everything came in voucher form and Gareth had to sell the vouchers to raise the funds.

He has his own charity
As befits a Lead SA Youth Hero Gareth has his own charity; Helping With Hands. Rache says proudly, “He’s always been like that. He is an old soul. He was about two years old when he wanted to do charity.” When Gareth is not busy helping other people he loves running with his dad Garth; he also fishes and releases the fish again into the ocean. He is the captain of the under-16 WP fishing team and would ideally love to pursue a career in marine biology one day.  You go, Gareth!

Please like Gareth’s Facebook page Helping With Hands; it will help raise awareness of the charities.
