They were neglected and misused. But last week the Cape of Good Hope SPCA announced that a group of 11 adult greyhounds and 10 puppies are up for adoption to good homes.
The greyhounds’ lives turned around on 10 July 2016 when an alert motorist noticed the pack of 11 dehydrated and exhausted dogs squashed inside the back of an old Isuzu bakkie travelling on the R27 from Darling/Yzerfontein. He alerted Melkbosstrand police and they intercepted the bakkie.
The SPCA described the pitiful scene inside the bakkie: “The dogs, all greyhounds, were panting excessively amidst the stench of urine and sweat. They were cramped and stressed and were displaying signs of heat exhaustion.” In this run-down condition they faced another trial; a long and potentially stressful period at the kennels of the SPCA. (The case against their owners is still ongoing.)
The time spent at the kennels has healed the greyhounds. According to SPCA spokesperson Tara McGovern people from Sighthound Rescue SA visited the greyhounds daily; exercised them and brought them healthy eats.
In a recent statement the SPCA elaborates on this. “They have helped immensely in keeping the dogs socialised and in good health. This involved daily interactions, feeding of special diets and caring for 10 puppies born a month after arriving at the SPCA.” All the puppies are already applied for; however we are still looking for homes for some of the adults. We will continue to work with Sighthound Rescue while re-homing the dogs. They will screen all families interested in adopting.”
