At least one West Coast mom is certain of getting a superb Mother’s Day meal tomorrow. Denzel Koenana, who is Kuier magazine’s assistant food editor and winner of the 2016 Huiskok competition, will be preparing a special Mother’s Day lunch for mom Jannetjie Schassers.
That’s one thing Koenana, who lives in Vredenburg with his mother, knows for sure. What he’ll make he’s not sure yet beyond that there might be pork roll and lots of other dishes and home made strawberry cheese cake. One suspects that he is a natural born cook, one who comes up with an inspired menu on the spur of the moment.
Denzel believes that Mother’s Day gifts should preferably be home made and from the heart. “We don’t buy expensive gifts. But we do go out of our way to make the day special for our mom,” he says.

Denzel’s Baked Snoek topped with tomato, parsley, onion, mustard seeds, apricot jam, sweet chilli sauce filling.
Koenana’s future looks rosy as well as tasty. His contract with Kuier continues until end of December. He still does catering, and is thinking (strongly) about opening his own coffee shop in Vredenburg and writing a cookbook.
