Get more get up and go in 2017 by being kinder to yourself and other people. Yes, what a novel idea!
We have some suggestions how you can go about doing this:

Read a good book. We’d like to suggest Wonder by RJ Palacio. It’s a so-called Young Adult book but it should not be slotted into any single category. Wonder is a book that makes you cringe, weep and laugh in turn. It tells the story of young Auggie who spends two years of his life wearing a helmet because he looks ‘like an orc’ despite many painful operations.  The book charts his brave and humorous first year at a proper school.

Go on an inspirational day trip. Why not go to Fairview Wine Estate outside Paarl and savour the flavour of a cheese and wine tasting – and let’s not forget the visual impact of the Goat Tower!

Perhaps you’re up for a drive to Hermanus on the Whale Coast where you can enjoy the flavoursome Hermanuspietersfontein wines. This journo chose that cellar because of Hermanuspietersfontein’s penchant for giving their wines witty names like Kleinboet, Swartskaap, Posmeester, Bloos and Kat met die Houtbeen. There are more and they are best enjoyed perhaps by someone who knows Afrikaans’ subtleties.

Follow an inspiring blogger. We suggest author JR Palacio’s blog http://choosekind.tumblr.com/. Palacio talks about being kind, which is a novel idea indeed in this day and age. This quote of hers feels compelling: The way I see it, a dream is like a drawing in your head that comes to life. You have to imagine it first. Then you have to work extremely hard to make it come true.

Practice being kind. Now, as always, is a good time to do this. Melksbosstrand has many worthwhile charities. You can contact Karen Dreyer, head of the Melkbosstrand Community Center on 082 415 5442; she is a fabulous organiser. You can also donate to the ACVV or Rotary or the very worthwhile animal welfare organisations Peanuts or Fallen Angels.

Do something with your hands, it will make you less crotchety. Master the art of crocheting and become a happy hooker or knit or plant your own vegetables. If all of this sounds absolutely sucky, why don’t you make your own craft beer?  Buy your beer making kit from www.brewcraft.co.za. Your coolness ranking will go sky high.

Do a digital detox. If this is impossible, do a partial digital detox! I know it sounds impossible but you will be amazed at how much time this frees up!
