The recent Melkbosstrand Galjoen Derby attracted a shoal of anglers. 140 Anglers took part. This is in comparison with the 120 that took part in 2016.
The anglers were able to fish along a long strand of beach between Cape Town Harbour and Yzerfontein.
According to the secretary of the Melkbosstrand Angling Club Wayne Pratt the day started bright and early, at 6 o’ clock. “The weather was great. However, the water was reasonably strong and the fish were very scarce.”
The result was that only two galjoen made it to the scales at weigh-in:
• 1st prize – heaviest galjoen — 42.5 cm / 1.86 kg (this fish also won the lucky angler the prize for the heaviest bag)
• 2nd prize – 2nd heaviest galjoen — 36 cm / 0.87 kg
The prize-giving and social were held at the Melkbosstrand Angling Club’s clubhouse in Robben Road that evening. Thanks to a shoal of sponsors every participant received a gift during the lucky draws.
