According to police spokesperson Captain Adriana Chandler, Milnerton Cluster police made 571 arrests during the period of 16 – 22 January. The Milnerton Cluster consists of Atlantis, Darling, Malmesbury, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton, Table View, Moorreesburg, Philadelphia and Riebeeck West.
The charges ranged from possession of imitation firearms to serving a warrant of arrest for a murder that took place in December 2016. We highlight some of the incidents.
Armed robbers arrested in Atlantis
Three suspects were arrested shortly after robbing a man at gunpoint in Atlantis. According to Captain Chandler the victim was walking home shortly before midnight on 18 January, when he was surrounded by robbers. The men pointed a firearm at him and took his cellphone and cash, before running away.
A member of the public called the police and the suspects were arrested shortly thereafter. Unfortunately neither the man’s stolen property nor the robbers’ firearm were recovered.
Stolen firearms found
On 17 February Atlantis police arrested an 18-year-old who had been seen running with a firearm down a street in Robinvale, Atlantis. Police found the suspect, but by that time he had gotten rid of the weapon. It was found covered in a scarf that the suspect had been seen wearing earlier, in a nearby field. Tests confirmed that the weapon had been stolen in Riversdale in May, 2009.
On Monday 16 January 2017 Table View police arrested a 34-year-old for being in possession of a stolen firearm. Tests confirmed that the weapon had been stolen in Bothasig in September, 2006.
