Well-known chef and artisan baker Colyn Serfontein’s (Colyn Kook Man Kos) lost his mother years ago. But he firmly believes “that every day is Mother’s Day.” Not just this coming Sunday 14 May.
“I have to let you down and tell you that my children will be taking me wife for lunch,” he says naughtily. He’s off the hook since he does most of the cooking and baking in the Serfontein home. He has also shown his affection for Daleen in a very visible way. He took beautiful photos of her and their children. These he used for an audio visual production he created on YouTube.
Colyn got well-known Afrikaans singer and songwriter Stef Kruger’s permission to use his recording of My Ma. He was awarded an honors by the Photographic Society of South Africa for the production. No big surprise. You can watch it here below.
Not all women are fortunate enough to have a man as supportive as Colyn in their lives. For them the battle for survival is intense, and simply putting food on the table is a struggle.
Some local moms battle
According to the head of the Melkbosstrand Community Centre Karen Dreyer, “there are many single mothers in and around Melkbosstrand and Table View who battle to get housing due to finances. Accommodation is expensive and single parents have a hard time.”
Help is needed
Appearances can be deceiving. The children of these mothers sometimes attend school in Van Riebeeckstrand. Last year already Dreyer issued a plea for donations on a forum. She explained the helplessness of these people. “With the current economic situation many have lost jobs and some earn too little to cover rent and food. We are in a situation where we desperately need donations of food and clothing to help these neighbours. Their kids are in school with our kids. They are our neighbours and they are suffering – through circumstances.”
