A City official was injured this morning when the dune he was standing on at Big Bay Beach collapsed. He was taken to hospital and Big Bay Beach was closed off.

According to a statement released by the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area North, Councillor Suzette Little, a decision has been taken to close off public access to Big Bay Beach until the stability of the dunes has been established.

“Big Bay Beach has suffered extensive damage and erosion as a result of the stormy weather that Cape Town has experienced over the past 48 hours. The area is unstable and unsafe.

We therefore urge the public to adhere to the interim restrictions for their own safety and not to access Big Bay Beach until further notice.”

According to Little “officials are on site and are making every effort to determine the stability of the eroded shoreline at Big Bay. Members of the public should please adhere to the signage and red tape restricting access.”
